End of the Penny
The U.S. Department of the Treasury has officially ended production of the penny, marking a historic change in how cash transactions are managed nationwide. While pennies remain legal tender, all banks can no longer order new pennies.
Our goal is to assist you in smoothly navigating this transition, which is taking place throughout the nation. For now, Bank Star has enough pennies, and there have been no changes to how transactions involving pennies are handled. As pennies slowly exit circulation and Bank Star’s supply decreases, here are the steps we will take to support you, our customers, and local businesses:
Ø Bank Star will announce procedural changes in a timely manner and as soon as the bank’s penny supplies are affected. This is an example of changes we may make:
o We would credit odd cents directly to your account when exact cash amounts are not available (for example, 450.52 would be paid as $50 in cash plus $0.52 account credit).
o When pennies are unavailable, cash totals may be rounded to the nearest nickel. The bank will follow the widely accepted rounding rules (anything below $0.05 will be rounded to $0.05, and anything above will be rounded up to $0.10).
Ø We will continue to accept penny deposits, and we encourage you to bring in coins sitting at home, helping keep existing pennies in circulation.
Ø Sign up for Savings Made Simple if you have Bank Star checking and savings accounts, and your electronic transaction will be credited to your savings account after being rounded to the closest dollar. If you have only one account, you can open a new one in person at the nearest branch or online at www.bank-star.com.
Ø Deposit change from a cash transaction into your account.
Ø The bank may limit or discontinue penny withdrawals when the penny supply is diminished. We may limit penny rolls for business customers to extend availability.
Note that the penny change has no effect on any debit cards, mobile wallets, ACH, or other electronic payments, which still post precise amounts.
